AFCON in turmoil! Sadio Mane speaks out as Morocco coach accuses Senegal boss of shaming Africa

The Senegal biggest star has explained why he refused to walk off the pitch during the explosive AFCON final, as tensions escalated between Senegal coach Pape Thiaw and Morocco’s Walid Regragui following one of the most controversial endings in tournament history.

The final between Senegal and hosts Morocco descended into controversy after a late penalty was awarded to the home side following a VAR review. Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw reacted furiously to the decision, ordering his players to walk off the pitch in protest. With only moments remaining in regulation time, the call threatened to hand Morocco the title in front of their home supporters.

Mane, however, chose not to follow his coach’s instructions. The Senegal captain stayed on the field and actively encouraged his teammates to remain calm and return to play. Speaking after the match, Mane made it clear that his priority was protecting the integrity of the game and the image of Senegalese football.

According to Mane, emotions were running high, but he believed leaving the pitch would have caused irreversible damage. He stressed that African football deserved better, especially on a stage as significant as an AFCON final watched by millions across the continent and beyond.

Events then took a dramatic turn. Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty for Morocco, but his attempted Panenka was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The miss completely shifted momentum, and Senegal capitalised in extra time through Pape Gueye’s powerful strike, sealing a famous 1-0 victory and the AFCON title.

Despite the triumph, the aftermath has been dominated by criticism. Morocco coach Walid Regragui launched a stinging attack on Thiaw, claiming the incident had embarrassed African football. He argued that regardless of refereeing decisions, teams must show restraint and respect, especially in finals.

Thiaw later admitted he regretted his actions and publicly apologised, acknowledging that his reaction was driven by frustration in the heat of the moment. He accepted that referees can make mistakes and conceded that instructing his players to leave the pitch was the wrong decision.

Mane’s intervention has since been widely praised by fans and pundits alike. Many have credited the Liverpool forward with showing leadership at a crucial moment, ensuring the match reached a sporting conclusion rather than ending in farce.

The AFCON final will be remembered not only for Senegal’s dramatic victory, but also as a moment that sparked debate about discipline, officiating, and leadership in African football. For Senegal, the trophy is secured, yet the controversy surrounding the final serves as a reminder of how quickly emotions can threaten to overshadow the game itself.
