Man United make shock move for Niko Kovac! Dortmund boss emerges as Carrick replacement

The Red Devils have reportedly made early enquiries about Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac as they plan for a permanent managerial appointment beyond Michael Carrick.

Manchester United’s search for a permanent manager appears to be gathering pace, with reports suggesting the club have made initial enquiries about Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac. Following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month, United are already laying the groundwork for a long term solution despite Michael Carrick currently overseeing first team duties on an interim basis.

Carrick’s return to Old Trafford has brought a sense of stability, highlighted by an impressive derby victory over Manchester City. However, the club hierarchy are understood to be exploring experienced options for the summer, with Kovac now emerging as a serious candidate.

The 54 year old has built a reputation as a disciplined tactician with experience at the highest level of European football. After spells managing Croatia, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, Monaco and Wolfsburg, Kovac took charge of Dortmund in January 2025. Under his guidance, the Bundesliga side have climbed to second place domestically and remain competitive in the Champions League.

Despite signing a contract extension until 2027 only months ago, Kovac’s situation has attracted attention from Old Trafford. United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is believed to be a key admirer, viewing the Croatian as a coach capable of restoring structure and intensity to a squad that has lacked consistency.

Sources suggest United have not yet made a formal approach, but have sought clarity on Kovac’s availability and interest in a Premier League move. The manager himself is reportedly open to testing his methods in England, having previously turned down Tottenham in 2021 when they approached him following Ryan Mason’s interim spell.

Ironically, Kovac is currently in England as Dortmund prepare to face Spurs in the Champions League, a fixture that could further intensify speculation surrounding his future. His name has also circulated in recent months during Chelsea’s managerial upheaval, underlining his growing appeal among elite clubs.

Meanwhile, Carrick’s position remains delicately balanced. With 16 matches left this season, the former United midfielder has a genuine opportunity to stake his claim for the permanent role, much like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did in similar circumstances. His emphasis on youth development and calm authority have already earned praise within the club.

Nevertheless, United are unwilling to leave their future to chance. Alongside Kovac, other high profile names remain in the frame, including Oliver Glasner, Gareth Southgate and several elite European coaches. The coming months will be decisive as results, dressing room harmony and long term vision all factor into one of the most important appointments in the club’s modern history.
