Nuno Santo gives worrying update after West Ham defender stretchered off in FA Cup
West Ham United’s FA Cup victory over QPR was overshadowed by a worrying injury to defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, who was stretchered off following a serious neck issue in the first half. The incident occurred in the 39th minute after a QPR corner, with the Greek international collapsing to the turf and requiring lengthy medical attention.
Mavropanos remained on the ground for several minutes as medics carefully assessed his condition, focusing on his head and neck. The atmosphere inside the London Stadium turned tense as players from both sides signalled urgently for treatment. Eventually, the 28-year-old was placed on a stretcher and taken off to warm applause from the crowd, with supporters clearly concerned by the severity of the situation.
Speaking after the match, West Ham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo admitted the injury was serious and confirmed that Mavropanos is still in pain.
“Yeah, it was a neck injury. We need to assess him properly. For the next couple of days he’s going to need to rest, and then we’ll see how he progresses.”
While initial fears suggested a potentially severe outcome, reports indicate that Mavropanos was conscious and awake when taken off, offering some relief to the West Ham medical staff and supporters. QPR also sent their well-wishes to the defender on social media, acknowledging the seriousness of the moment.
The long stoppage resulted in ten minutes of added time before half-time, during which West Ham managed to take the lead through Crysencio Summerville. However, the Hammers were forced into extra time after QPR equalised in the second half, before new signing Taty Castellanos eventually sealed progression to the fourth round.
Mavropanos’ injury could have wider implications for West Ham’s season. Defensive issues have already been a concern, and with Max Kilman struggling for form, Nuno may find himself short of options if the Greek defender faces an extended spell on the sidelines. The club have already strengthened in January, but another defensive addition may become necessary.
For now, the priority remains Mavropanos’ health. Neck injuries are treated with extreme caution, and West Ham will not rush his return. As Nuno stressed, further assessments will determine the next steps, with everyone at the club hoping the defender can make a full and swift recovery.
